GAMBIN AND ITS WATER RESOURCES: A CONCERN FOR EARTH
Working directly in contact with the earth creates a very special bond with it. It’s all about respect and care. We obtain from it the best of its fruits and we want to compensate by protecting its essence. Agriculture is, worldwide, the industry that consumes the most water resources. Therefore, the management we make of them in GAMBÍN is of strategic importance, both for crops and for the care of the land that hosts them.
Proper use of water is essential. There is a double aspect: on the one hand, the amount of water the crops require; on the other, the risk of contamination of our surface water. Two issues to address as efficiently as possible.
In the case of GAMBÍN, the cultivation of citrus fruits in general - and of lemon in particular - is concentrated in the southeast of Spain: the south of the province of Alicante, the Region of Murcia and the north of Almeria. An area in which the most important crop volume of the national lemon surface is concentrated (up to 90%), which requires paying special attention to water management as it is also an area of low rainfall.
The good soil and climate conditions in the area contrast with the water limitation: an important condition for restricting access to such a basic resource for crops. This restriction has led us to reach a high technical level when it comes to water resources management: in order to be more efficient, we must take care of every detail.
To do this, we follow different master guidelines. On the one hand, we rely on data from agro climatic studies of the area, which helps us to know the evotranspiration of the crop. We apply soil analysis techniques - with physical-chemical characteristics - and modernize irrigation systems, using precision irrigation.
In addition, it is necessary to develop fertirrigation strategies (UF control) and apply irrigation technology using humidity sensors. This allows each drop of water to be used intelligently and effectively, minimizing waste and exploiting the full potential of resources to obtain the best result in crops.
As such, water and energy consumption is fully optimized within our citrus farms. Thus, at GAMBÍN we contribute to the sustainability of the crop, reducing the impact on the environment with a notable reduction in direct crop costs. A way to convey to the earth that we want to take care of it and respect it.
