Zero waste in agriculture: this is how GAMBÍN is adapting its production for compliance
  • 11 May 2020

An increasing number of consumers are opting for a healthy diet and therefore, from sustainable sources. A trend that is being transferred to the markets, which reflect an upward trend in products that offer guarantees of not containing phytosanitary residues while increasing their demands in terms of waste control.

It is in this context that the rise of what is known as "zero waste" arises. This is an integral management system for farms that brings together different crofting techniques. In this line, GAMBÍN works according to a protocol focused on optimizing resources and guaranteeing what is established in the framework of zero waste, and which is evident in the following aspects of its production cycle:

GENERAL AGRONOMIC ASPECTS

Each of the cultivation techniques implemented by GAMBÍN is aimed at reducing the possible environmental impact as much as possible. In addition, the available tools are considered in an integrated way to achieve the desired objective.

LAND, SOIL PREPARATION AND TILLAGE

Through the use of the agronomic characteristics of the soil, the precise knowledge for its adequate management is acquired, as well as for its improvement and conservation, including its protection by means of vegetal covers.

FERTILIZATION AND ADJUSTMENTS

The study of the nutritional state of the crop is fundamental for the establishment of a plan of action. According to this plan, the supply of nutrients is carried out using the most appropriate ways for the conditions, which are reflected in the fertirrigation programme. Through this, an analytical monitoring of the crop (leaves, fruits, etc.) will be carried out to check if the fertilization programme is adequate.

IRRIGATION ANALYSIS

The chemical and bacteriological analysis of the water used for irrigation must be constant in order to achieve zero waste. From the data obtained, the necessary annual volumes are oriented, together with the calculation of the needs of the crop provided by the agronomic study.

HEALTHY CITRUS FRUITS WITH ALL THEIR QUALITIES

This practice not only results in healthier and more environmentally friendly crops, but also in regular, timely harvests, thus moving closer to traditional agriculture. This is perceived in the final product, providing consumers with healthy citrus fruits with all their qualities intact in terms of colour, taste, smell and texture.
