GAMBÍN Almeria: the success of a unique way of doing things
In a more global world, it is easy to be carried away by overall market tendencies and more general techniques adopted by the majority. Often do we speak here about procedures that promise quick success, but that generally come with an uncertain result.
Within this context, GAMBÍN Almeria is a stronghold of better agricultural practices in its region. For over 20 years, it upholds its particular understanding of how the regional speciality: the tomato, must be cultivated. Almeria is a white spot in the southern part of Spain, and in the middle of a vast extension covered in glasshouses, known as ‘the plastic sea’, our company, with its headquarters in Cox, Alicante, ensures that you still can enjoy two tomato varieties which are hard to find nowadays: the Bisonte and Versalles assortments.
Five hectares of glasshouse serve us to nurture these two products. They are grown and taken care for at our fields in La Cañada, situated outside the city limits of the capital of Almeria, and in Almerimar, within the El Ejido area.
For several decades now, we, at GAMBÍN, trust and persist in our belief of combining sustainable innovation with vanguard techniques. Leading this endeavour are two persons who are the guardians of this treasure: Amador and Lorenzo.
But what are the secrets behind the success of it? Frist there is the product. ‘The Bisonte variety is a Tomato with signature, a speciality within the commodity of cultivating tomatoes’, explains Lorenzo, a technician that has been working with Gambín since 1983. He describes the tomato as a Ferrari red variety with traditional taste, its size and high resistance to handling operations have made it a desired product on the international market. Then there is the Versalles, a squat tomatowith an intense colour and flavour, coming in smaller sizes. ‘When all growers see the quality of their tomatoes drop towards the lower end of the season, our tomato maintains its value and it permits us to harvest with high quality standards until the month of March.’, explains Lorenzo.
Even so, it is nearly impossible to grow these products without taking care of things in an orderly and balanced way.
The second reason why GAMBÍN Almeria is having such a success is because a depurated technique is being applied when handling the crops and fields. This is where Amador comes into action. He has much to say about cultivation, as he is the main responsible for field maintenance, practicing at all time environmentally balanced traditional agriculture. He prefers to achieve an integrated production through the appliance of bio sanitary treatments which produce zero residue levels, preserving ecological best practices.
Under the supervision of a central technical department, and in perfect harmony with Lorenzo, Amador has been working for over 20 years, checking that all is as it should be and nothing is forgotten, investigating to ensure that complexity is made easy again. He analyses the soil’s reaction in an ever changing environment to carry out the most suitable adjustments. ‘Within a glasshouse, many things can happen and we must stay alert to be able anticipating or preventing accordingly’ as he explains.
Each field is a world on its own, and the final product depends on prime management. From ensuring the best treatment of the terrain, the whitening of coverings in May, the application of the necessary treatments, the right crop care, to guaranteeing the most correct water supply, accurate sowing techniques and exact coordination of packing, transport and delivery over long distances, all matters.
This way of management confers to the GAMBÍN tomato all of the markets confidence in the product. It is a recognition of values that have been present for decades, and they are embedded in every step taken.
